Cedar Breaks is located 37 kilometres (23 miles) east of Cedar City and 56 kilometres (35 miles) west of Bryce Canyon.
The park is shaped like a giant amphitheatre that spans some 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) and is more than 610 metres (2,000 feet) deep. The observation points exceed 3.000 metres (10,000 feet) above sea level; therefore, the summers are cool and the winters bring enough snow to prevent vehicular access to the park between the months of November and April.
The many forms of rock in the amphitheatre have been shaped by rain, streams, ice and wind. Their colours are various combinations of reds, yellows and purples, depending on the mixture of iron and manganese left by the ancient rivers.
Cedar Breaks is surrounded by the Dixie National Forest where one can find lush alpine meadows clustered with ponderosa pines and quaking aspens. During the summer months the fertile land is covered by many varieties of wild flowers. |
